Sunday Scriptures — In One Ear…

Isaiah 40By Sandy Kirby Quandt

I’m sure I’m not the only one, but sometimes I hear something and it goes in one ear, and straight out the other without even pausing on the way. This phenomenon is not an aged-related issue, I can assure you. I’ve done it all my life. All my life, but not all the time.

We mean to listen. Honest. We really do. But we are intent on something else, and the incoming data gets scrambled and lost in transition.

In the book of James we are told not to fool ourselves that we are listening to what the Bible tells us, when it goes in one ear and out the other. We are told to act on what we hear.

How many times have we sat through a message and thought, “That was powerful.” Maybe we’ve even taken notes. But as soon as we step outside the building…we are approached by that most annoying person…or cut off in traffic…or the family member is being unreasonable…the powerful message becomes a distant memory.

We vaguely remember something we needed to apply to our lives…what was it?

Not putting God’s word into practice is sorta’ like someone having left-over breakfast on their face. They see it in the mirror but do nothing to remove it, and then go about their day.

God’s word tells us we’ve got sin in our lives, egg yolk on our face if you will, but if we don’t do anything about getting rid of it, we’ve let his word go in one ear and out the other.

We need to act on what we hear.

Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when you are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear! Those who hear and don’t act are like those who glance in the mirror, walk away, and two minutes later have no idea who they are, what they look like. James 1:22-24 (MSG)

I wish you well.
