Pause for Poetry — Slow Down

Slow Down
by Shirley Specht Johnson

Slow down

from the busyness,

from the here and there.

Relax

on the front porch

in grandma’s rocking chair.

Slow down

to hear the robin sing

its morning song.

Breathe

the morning air,

perhaps you’ll sing along.

Slow down

share some kind words

with a passerby.

Enjoy,

the beauty of the clouds,

the stars in the sky.

Slow down,

share a meal with your family,

your friends.

Take time,

for those you love.

Take time

to laugh again.

Slow down

don’t get mad when the stop light turns red.

Think of all the good things,

count your blessings instead.

Slow down

from chasing dreams deadlines and goals.

Love

the simple moments,

for they are life you know.

I have been taking time lately to just slow down like this poem speaks of….at first I would feel guilty but now i realize the benefits of rest and quiet meditation on the Lord is our medicine and food for our soul. If we don’t we run on empty. Thanks for that poem of reminder and permission!

Carmela, Thank you for the kind words. We have so much going on in our lives and so many distractions, we do have to give ourselves permission to slow down. Thank you Sandy for sharing.

Hi Shirley…..Thanks for your beautiful poem. I can always use a reminder to relax. The Bible says that Jesus rested, so if He needed to stop once in a while, we need to too. I tend to overdo very often. I have written a few poems too on slowing down but don’t always follow my own instructions. Glad that we are both writing on Sandy’s blog. I will try to visit your site again soon. I just returned from a four day writing conference in the Pennsylvania area. At the moment, I am on overload from all the info on… Read more »

Thank you. Also glad that we are able to share our poems on Sandy’s blog. I enjoy reading your poems and Sandy’s posts too. I think we just need to be able to tell ourselves that it is o.k. to rest.
